Honey of a Crowd at JamFest

A Honey of a JamFest — one of McDonogh’s most anticipated and joyful back-to-school events — welcomed more than 1,800 students, parents, and volunteers on Friday, October 23, its largest crowd ever.

At the end of the school day, lower schoolers and their families traveled by hay wagon and middle schoolers raced across the athletic fields to Roots Farm, where upper schoolers stood ready to paint faces, demonstrate the physics of punkin’ chunkin’, and run the corn maze and other farm games. The community picked pumpkins, enjoyed fresh-pressed cider in the orchard, visited the chickens and turkeys, and devoured more than 1,000 pieces of pizza prepared by Chef Mallory Staley — all to the sounds of the student and faculty bands on a glorious fall afternoon.

“It was so meaningful to see the connections across each division,” says Director of Roots Farm Sharon Hood. “This year’s festival demonstrated what can happen when the McDonogh community comes together with generosity, enthusiasm, and a shared purpose. JamFest is not separate from the farm’s educational work — it gives that work meaning.”
