Former Head Charlie Britton to Serve as Interim Leader, Search Firm Announced
McDonogh announced today that former Head of School Charlie Britton will return on July 1, 2027 to serve as the Interim Head of School for the 2027–2028 school year. On Thursday, September 17, current Head of School Dave Farace ‘87 announced his departure at the end of the current school year. He will take over leadership of The Benjamin School in Palm Beach, Florida.
Britton served as McDonogh’s twelfth Head of School from 2007 to 2018 and led the School through 11 years of remarkable growth and transformation. “During his tenure, Charlie was admired for his warmth, devotion to students, and enduring commitment to the McDonogh experience,” said Stacey Boyer ‘76, the Head of School Search Chair, in a letter to the McDonogh community.
Under Britton's leadership, McDonogh built the Naylor STEM Building, the Edward St. John Student Center, and the Rosenberg Campus Green; renovated John McDonogh Stadium and enhanced other athletic facilities; redesigned and rededicated Memorial Court; added a prekindergarten program; opened the Fader Innovation Center; and expanded on-campus faculty and staff housing.
“Just as important as his impact on the campus itself, Charlie made character development a top priority, championing the Character Compass and its values of respect, responsibility, honesty, kindness, and service,” Boyer said, adding, “He also strengthened the academic experience, launching LifeReady, Roots Farm, Folio Collaborative, robotics, and a nationally recognized debate program.”
Since leaving McDonogh in 2018, Britton and his wife, Jen, have been residing in Southport, Maine. He worked as a senior consultant at Carney Sandoe & Associates, an independent school search firm, from 2019 to 2025, and served as interim Head of School at Sant Bani School during the 2020– 2021 academic year. In 2025, Charlie founded Britton Education Group, a consulting firm helping schools and nonprofits with strategic planning and fundraising.
Boyer also announced that the search for McDonogh’s next Head of School will be in partnership with Spencer Stuart, a leading global leadership and search firm. She explained that the search would be thorough and inclusive, and that it is anticipated the new Head of School would begin on July 1, 2028.
“With a strong school year ahead led by Dave Farace, Charlie's familiar leadership to follow, and an experienced partner guiding our search, McDonogh is well-positioned for this next chapter,” concluded Boyer.
