The Sophomore Poetry Slam on Thursday, May 21, was a powerful reminder of the hope and strength in young voices. Every year, sophomores craft original poems in their English classes, writing about personal truths, formative experiences, and the social issues that matter most to them. From those poems, students vote on which ones will be performed live, making the lineup a reflection of the class itself: chosen by peers, for peers.
Emceeing the event was Lady Brion, Maryland's Poet Laureate and one of Baltimore's most celebrated spoken word artists. A National Poetry Slam Champion and longtime educator who has brought poetry into schools across the city, Lady Brion has spent her career proving that poetry is more than art; it's a tool for community, identity, and change. Her presence brought both energy and gravity to the room, holding space for every performer and uniting the audience in support of each voice that took the stage.
