McD and Komen: A Winning Team

The McDonogh Community came out in force October 19 for the 16th annual Komen Maryland Race for the Cure in Hunt Valley. McDonogh was the largest team for the third year in a row and participants raised $41,816 for breast cancer education and research in Maryland.

“The incredible generosity of the McDonogh community really restores your faith in the innate goodness of human beings” said Natasha Wesker, co-chair of the McDonogh Parents Association Race for the Cure Committee.

Students, parents, grandparents, teachers, staff, and alumni ran and walked together wearing bright orange team t-shirts designed by eighth grader Rachel P. Many sports teams were on hand as well, thanks to a “Fall Teams Coaches Challenge” that was instituted for the first time this year to increase upper school student participation. JV field hockey won the challenge with 100% team participation. Varsity field hockey was a close second.

An additional contingent of teachers, parents, and upper school students offered cups of water and encouragement to what seemed like an endless flow of runners and walkers midway through the race.

A special thank you goes to the McDonogh Parents Association Race for the Cure Committee, chaired by Natasha Wesker and Kim Callari, for uniting the McDonogh Community in the effort. Special thanks also goes to the sponsors of McDonogh's team: Price Modern, LLC, The Footlick Family Foundation, the Schaller, Caputo, and Settleman families, Red Abbey, LLC, and Money Mailer.
