25th Annual Cardboard Boat Race

Middle School Band Spring Concert

The McDonogh Middle School Bands presented a wonderful spring concert in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre on May 13, 2014. The four groups that performed were the 5th Grade Band, 6th Grade Band, 7th Grade Band, and 8th Grade Band all under the direction of Elizabeth Irvine.

TWELFTH NIGHT - 3:00 P.M. CAST

McDonogh's Institute for Shakespeare and Renaissance Studies and the McDonogh Theatre Lab performed William Shakespeare's Twelfth Night on Sunday, June 1 at 3:00 p.m. in the Osborne Black Box Theatre. Considered by many to be Shakespeare's finest comedy, Twelfth Night explores the vicissitudes of human desire and the ways in which people try to make sense of themselves and others.

Pourquoi Tales 2014

Wearing colorful masks made from plaster molds of their own faces, Fourth Grade students performed original pourquoi tales for Lower School students, parents, and special guests.

VIDEOCLASS 2014

Lights! Camera! Action! Sixteen teams of Third Grade students, under the direction of special projects teacher Cindy Green, used iPads to videotape Lower School subject classes and activities. Each team created an animated character to fit its assigned class or activity, adding voice and motion to the character within the edited video. We hope you enjoy “Lower School Days, The McDonogh Way!”

The Force Club 2014

During the Middle School assembly on May 16, The Force Club, featuring faculty members Gregg Kleiman, Craig Copeland, Eileen Heady, and Josh Waller, with Mr. Kleiman's brother Casey, and student Ryan Ford presented a drama that included an exciting lightsaber display. The plot unfolded with the Sith Lord plotting to get revenge against the Jedi order for killing his brother.

Songfest 2014

Songfest is an annual fundraiser to benefit the Concert Choir tour. This year's event featured performances by The Gentlemen Songsters and The Woman of Note. Faculty advisors Katie Pearl and Philip Olsen joined in on the fun.

A Night of Percussion

Lower, Middle and Upper School Percussion presented a concert in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre on May 8. 2014. Director of Percussion Wayne Hudson, who is retiring after thirty-nine years of teaching, was presented with a variety of gifts.

Dolphins to the Sea

Second Grade students in Room 208 presented the play "Dolphins to the Sea" on May 8, 2014 in the Kelly Center for parents, students, and guests. The story takes place in Florida, where children on a school field trip visit an aquarium, talk to dolphins, and get help setting the dolphins free.

Upper School Spring Band Concert 2014

The Upper School Jazz Band, Jazz Ensemble, and Concert Band performed in a spring concert in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre on May 6, 2014 under the direction of Don New, Director of Upper School Instrumental Music. Each senior jazz and concert band student was presented with a plaque.

Choral Ensembles Spring Concert 2014

The McDonogh Upper School Choral Ensembles, under the direction of Philip Olsen, presented their annual spring concert in the Tagart Memorial Chapel on May 4, 2014. The Foxleigh Hill Singers, composed of faculty, staff, alumni, and spouses participated in the program. Each senior choir member was presented with a rose.

Multicultural Festival 2014

"Passport to New Horizons" was the theme of this year's multicultural festival that was held in the Edward St. John Student Center on Friday, May 2. The celebration included a wonderful showcase of student performances, interactive booths, and an international buffet featuring ethnic specialties.

Poetry Slam by Room 206

Second Grade students in Room 206, teacher Kate Hailstone's class, presented "Poetry Slam" on Wednesday, April 30 in the Osbourne Black Box Theatre. In a celebration of National Poetry Month, the students chose poems by famous poets to recite, creating their own movements and props to accompany their presentations.

All School Strings Concert 2014

The McDonogh Upper School String Orchestra and Middle School Strings, under the direction of Andrew Shaud, and the Lower School String Ensembles, under the direction of Catherine Frey, presented a spring concert of outstanding performances in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre on April 29, 2014.

Tibetan Buddhist Sand Mandala

As part of a Visual Arts Department presentation, two Tibetan monks (lamas), Lama Sonam and Khenpo Choephel, created a sand mandala dedicated to the deity of compassion, in the Tuttle Gallery with the assistance of McDonogh students. Upon completion, following a ceremonial procession, sand from the finished mandala was released into the pond.

Headmasters: McDonogh's Past, Present, and Future

Headmasters Bob Lamborn, Bill Mules, Bo Dixon and Charlie Britton joined moderator Eileen Toohey for a discussion on the evolution of McDonogh. The four headmasters, who served McDonogh from the 1950s until today, spoke about the school's values, history, and future. They also took questions from the Board of Visitors.

DEDICATION AND RIBBON CUTTING CEREMONY, April 4, 2014
Former McDonogh parent Edward St. John, McDonogh trustee Jack Luetkemeyer, and Headmaster Charlie Britton addressed students, faculty, staff, and benefactors gathered to celebrate the opening of the Edward St. John Student Center. Members of the Upper School jazz band played "Future So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades" for attendees who wore orange and black sunglasses as part of the festivities.

McDonogh School Scholarship Celebration 2014

On April 3, 2014, students, alumni, and benefactors gathered as a community to celebrate the generosity of McDonogh sponsors. Guest speakers Merritt A. Livermore '91, Associate Head of the Middle School, and Pegah B.'14, McDonogh senior, addressed the audience in the Deborah Paterakis Hall located in the new Edward St. John Student Center.

Fourth Grade Take-Apart Day

On Friday, February 28, “Take-Apart Day,” fourth graders deconstructed small appliances, household gadgets, and electronics in a culmination of their science unit on Simple Machines. Working with teachers Argie O’Shea and Craig Whiteford, in addition to members of Mr. Motsko’s Upper School AP Physics class, the fourth grade students gained insight into design and mechanics.

Middle School Robotics Competition

The first annual Middle School robotics competition got underway on February 24 in the R-L Center. Prior to the event, engaged teams of Middle School students, under the guidance of science teacher Rick Thompson, built and programmed robots using Lego Mindstorm Robotics.

Teaching Character Through Literature

Third grade students in "A Celebration of Children's Books" presented a series of plays on February 20 in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre that illustrated how children's literature can be used to teach character. The third grade classes chose one point on the McDonogh moral compass, selecting from respect, responsibility, honesty, or kindness and making it the focus of their book selections on which the plays were based.

Chinese Orchestra Performance

The orchestra of Xiamen Foreign Language School (XMFLS) performed in Tagart Memorial Chapel on February 5. Xiamen Foreign Language School is a prestigious public and coeducational school located in Xiamen, Fujian, China. The school's orchestra, which consists of 70 talented musicians, is directed by Ms. Mingfang Wu.

Lower School Problem Solving Week

During the week of January 27, Lower School students were actively involved in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) problem-based learning. They solved problems using math skills and science knowledge as they designed and tested bird feeders, mailboxes, catapults, and other items that they constructed. Students worked in small collaborative groups and with engineering students from Upper School teacher Jen Singer's class.

Chinese New Year 2014

Farewell to the Year of the Snake, and welcome to the Year of the Horse! This year, Chinese New Year fell on Friday, January 31, and Lower School students were invited to wear red in honor of the holiday. Red is the color of luck and fortune in the Chinese culture. In the Lower School, Chinese teacher Fangfang Ma's first and second grade students sang songs and learned about the holiday.

Orchestra Winter Concert 2014

The Upper School assembly on January 24, 2014 featured a joint presentation by students from Xin Hua High School of Tian Jin, China and students at McDonogh School who are studying Chinese. The event was coordinated by Chinese teacher Jenny Li.

Blankets of Hope

At the Chapel on December 17, third graders sang songs and read poems of hope. On display were the fleece blankets they made for the Red Devils, a local breast cancer support organization that will distribute the blankets to patients. One of these blankets was presented to a special guest.

A Winter Concert 2013

The McDonogh Upper School Choral Ensembles, under the direction of Philip Olsen, Head of the Choral Music Department, performed in their annual winter concert in the Tagart Memorial Chapel on December 15, 2013. The audience was treated to outstanding performances by The Concert Choir, The Senior Singers, The Women of Note, The Gentleman Songsters, and The Foxleigh Hill Singers.

Utilizing storytelling and masks, The McDonogh Theatre Lab with Resident Artist Kali Quinn created and presented an original improvised play entitled "Oddballs & Investors" in the Osborne Black Box Theatre on November 1, 2013.

Aquapalooza 2013

Lower School students celebrated Aquapalooza as a reward for reading 3,898 books this summer, surpassing their goal of 3,250 by 648 books! Mrs. Lidston, Head of Lower School, dressed up as Monster University's "Mike" and joined the students on the water slides.
