Battle O’ Baltimore Robots Return

Hundreds of high school students from 30 schools in Maryland and surrounding states are ready to send their robots into steely competition at the Ninth Annual Battle O’ Baltimore robotics tournament at McDonogh School. This event, which is free of charge and open to the public, will take place on Saturday, September 26 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The McDonogh Eagles Robotics Team (#4505) is coached by Upper School computer science and robotics teacher Kim Smith, who is proud to host this event for the second consecutive year. The Battle O’ Baltimore is one of the east coast’s premier FIRST® Robotics Competition off- season tournaments.

Teams will maneuver their 120-lb. custom-built robots in a game titled Recycle Rush, created by FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology). The game requires the robots to stack up to six rectangular storage totes, place a green recycling can on top of the stack, and then put “trash” in the form of pool noodles into the can. The robots will be guided by a combination of custom software and human drivers operating them remotely. The event will also feature robotics demonstrations from younger robotics leagues like the First Tech Challenge League for seventh through twelfth graders and the First Lego League for fourth through eighth graders.

In an interview with the Carroll County Times, Mr. Smith said the Battle O’ Baltimore serves as a learning opportunity not just for the students involved, but for children who come as spectators as well. “I remember the first time I went to one of these competitions I was floored…I was amazed at what these kids had accomplished,” he said.

If you would like to be amazed as well, please join us on Saturday, September 26 at the Rollins-Luetkemeyer Athletic Center. For more information, visit
