Annual Awards Ceremony Honors Athletes

When it comes to sports, stats are a big part of the equation. The 19th Annual Athletic Awards Evening held Monday, June 1 in the Horn Theatre not only enumerated the accomplishments of McDonogh’s varsity and senior athletes, it also drove home the value of teamwork. Co-Athletic Director Mickey Deegan reminded the student athletes of the other people who are also part of “the team” including: parents, teachers, coaches, maintenance and grounds crews, the athletic department staff, trainers, and even the horses.

Among the impressive statistics shared at the ceremony are:

  • This past school year, 612 Upper School games were played and McDonogh won 70% of them.
  • Almost 71% of Upper School students played two sports.
  • More than 70% of our athletes earned a spot on the school’s Honor Roll or Dean’s List.
  • Out of 28 varsity teams, 17 of which are ranked, 10 varsity teams were ranked in the top 10 in the Baltimore area this year.
  • Ten teams won championships this school year; and five additional teams made it to the finals.
  • Eight teams went undefeated in league play.
  • The Baltimore Sun named four McDonogh students “Player of the Year” in their respective sports and 16 athletes earned First Team All-Metro honors.
  • The varsity equestrian team earned championship ribbons at local and regional competitions with the help of three top-notch horses: Rusty, Cody, and Melody.
  • The girls lacrosse team is the number one team in the state and the nation, having won 133 consecutive games.

During the Athletic Awards Evening, students in each sport were recognized by their coaches with the Coaches Award and by their teammates with the Eagle Award. Varsity letters were presented to retiring coaches Ginger Gelston, and Diane and Tom Young. Special awards and honors were also presented during the ceremony, including The Ensign C. Markland Kelly, Jr. Service Award, and Four Year Awards presented to athletes who have played on a varsity team for four consecutive years. Additionally, 28 seniors who have been part of a McDonogh team every season of Upper School were recognized. They will receive Golden Eagle awards at Commencement.
