Lower School Celebrates At Closing Ceremony

The weather was “iffy” on Friday, May 30, the morning of the Lower School Closing, but with an air of optimism it was determined that the ceremony would take place outside on Childs Memorial Terrace. Prior to the event, the fourth grade gathered in Esther Ann Hall to receive their official McDonogh pins from their teachers.

When the ceremony began, grade-by-grade, the students filed down the hill behind their class banners, past family and friends who gathered for the occasion. The fourth grade, who were celebrating their promotion to Middle School, paraded to their seats behind the Fourth Grade Drum Corps led for the last time by Wayne Hudson who will be retiring after 38 years at McDonogh. After John Grega, who is also retiring, gave the invocation, Head of the Lower School Noreen Lidston shared memories and advice from the fourth grade. In addition to the basic words of wisdom including, listen to the teacher, stay organized, and be kind, they also offered the following tips:

  • Don’t wait in line forever for funnel cake at the Math Carnival because, before you know it, the Carnival is over.
  • When changing into different clothes for a play, make sure they aren’t backwards.
  • Never try to stand up on the water slide during AquaPalooza. (It will not work.)
  • Always raise your hand. Do not call out. Teachers know what raising your hand means!
  • Always invite the new person to play. You can make new friends and the new person will feel better.
  • Whenever you’re doing any project, choose a good partner - not your best friend, but a person you think you will work well with.
  • Wear shorts when you want to because you will not have that option in Middle School!

Before Headmaster Charlie Britton awarded certificates of completion to the rising Middle School students, he also shared some advice. With an old jelly jar in his hand, he wished them a magical summer and encouraged them to do what he looks forward to each June – catching (and releasing) fireflies.

Once the Class of 2022 received their certificates and hugs from the Lower School faculty and staff, it came time for one of the most anticipated moments of the morning—the blazer toss. The 74 fourth graders celebrated their completion of Lower School by ceremoniously tossing their blazers in the air (and cheering when they got stuck in the trees.) Following the morning ceremony they gathered for refreshments by the John McDonogh statue.
