Exciting Competition at Battle of Books

McDonogh Middle School students went head-to-head with readers from nine other area independent schools in the 14th Annual Battle of the Books on Wednesday, April 30. The lively competition at Calvert School had the suspense and cheering of a sporting event, as participants were quizzed on their knowledge of a variety of books.

McDonogh’s eighth grade team, Alexis H., Lauren S., and Jessica T., who have competed together for four years took first place, marking the third time the trio has won. Their impressive finish was an exciting way to cap-off their years together.

The intelligence and dedication needed to read, comprehend, and recall the 10 books (per grade) assigned for the competition was also demonstrated by the intrepid seventh grade team of James L. and Ben M. Their exciting match was followed by an intense competition for the sixth grade team of Hannah D., Brooke G., Laya N., and Aidan W, who also snagged an exciting first place finish for McDonogh. Another highlight of this high energy day was the second place tie earned by the fifth grade team of Ellye A., Alyssa M., Jack M., and Victoria C.

Librarians Stasha Gibbs and Sara Beach, who also serve as coaches, bring together teams from Calvert, Baltimore Lutheran, St. Paul’s, Severn, Garrison Forest, Glenelg, Roland Park Country School, and Bryn Mawr. Fifth grade teacher and former librarian Nancy McFadden created the Battle of the Books competition in 2000 to inspire students to read.

Congratulations to all the participants.
