Fond Farewell to Retiring US Faculty/Staff

It’s not easy to surprise Upper School faculty, especially those who have been around a while. They’ve seen every trick in the book. But on Wednesday, April 16, thanks to detailed planning by the Rollins-Luetkemeyer Leaders and members of the Student Government Association, along with buy-in from Headmaster Charlie Britton, the Upper School pulled off a well-kept secret—a farewell parade and video for retiring faculty and staff.

The honorees, Dave Harley, John Grega, Larry Johnston, Peggy Warner, Carl Haller, Mona Barr, and Wayne Hudson, who have devoted more than 200 years at McDonogh between them, were called to the Headmaster’s Office along with the rest of the Upper School faculty for a brief meeting. At the meeting, Dave Harley was presented with his top hat and cane and invited to lead one last double, self-enveloping parade. Meanwhile, the Upper School student body was lined up along the path in front of Allan Building, with signs and symbols of appreciation for the group of retirees.

The parade then worked its way to the Horn Theatre where the Upper School was treated to a moving tribute to the seven honorees. The surprise assembly concluded with The Women of Note singing For Good from the Broadway show Wicked, which ends with the words, “Because I knew you...I have been changed for good...”
