Title Upper School Counselor

General Summary

This position will serve as Counselor to Upper School Students in grades 9-12.

The successful candidate will possess an outstanding attention to detail, demonstrated ability to multitask, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to communicate information about complex student information in a respectful and clear manner. Candidates should be able to balance independent work and self-management with a strong collaborative approach.

Essential Functions

  • Provide individual and group counseling services, mostly on a time-limited basis.
  • Provide consultation to school personnel, parents, and administrators.
  • Provide referrals to community resources, including therapists, counselors, psychologists, and psychiatrists.
  • Serve as liaison between school personal and outside service providers.
  • Serve as a liaison with parents, guardians, faculty, and administrators about student mental health issues.
  • Coordinate delivery support services to students with learning specialists, parents, and divisional administration.
  • Coordinate services and continuity of support with Middle School Counselor as appropriate.
  • Provide professional development to faculty regarding understanding and supporting students, as well as counseling issues within the school setting.
  • Provide education on relevant social-emotional topics to students and faculty in small groups as well as in larger meetings.
  • Plan and deliver educational programs for students and the parent community.
  • Assist with the transition of students from Middle to Upper School as appropriate.
  • Contribute as a member of school crisis team at McDonogh and with neighboring schools.
  • Attend and participate in Guidance meetings to identify students in need of support.
  • Follow through on any action steps as a result of the Guidance meetings.
  • Engage in the co-curricular and extra-curricular life of the school in some fashion to be known and recognized by students, such as the Peer Education or Wellness Programs.

Recommended Employment Qualifications

A strong interest in continued professional growth and development is required, as is a sense of humor and the ability to see the positive in challenging situations. Must be professionally licensed in the state of Maryland. Must have either a Master of Social Work or Doctorate in Psychology. The ability to generate and implement creative and innovative ideas for engaging and working with students is needed. The successful applicant will have solid training and experience with a range of diagnostic and treatment options for a high-school population.

  • Must be able to comply with background check, including finger prints, as required by the agency and / or state regulations.
  • Must have three to five years of experience working with children and families in school settings.

Working Conditions

Evening and weekend hours may be required from time to time. Lifting and carrying of equipment is not typical, but may be required on rare occasions. Sitting. Standing. This job involves both walking to locations on the campus and sitting for long periods of time. Walking around campus.
